If you can't do it right maybe don't "just do it"

This applies strongly to candidates engaging with recruiters. I am a big advocate for candidates picking up the phone and calling recruiters to build relationships rather than sitting behind a computer screen and applying for jobs. However, if this call is done poorly it will most certainly have an adverse effect on your chances of securing the job.

A classic example of this is candidates that call up immediately after applying to ask whether their application has been received. Not only is this a massive opportunity lost to sell yourself and your skills it is also badgering the recruiter and will completely turn them off.

If you are going to call a recruiter put some thought into what it is you want out of the call and how you are going to go about getting it. I recommend calling the recruiter before applying but making sure you have reviewed the job advert thoroughly and picked out three points to highlight where your skills meet the criteria. They are not going to want to meet you unless you meet their needs and it's your responsibility to highlight that.

If you're not prepared to put in this effort to make the call effectively then don't pick up the phone! Finding a job is a job in of itself, treat it like one and be professional.
